Do It Up!

It’s time to pull out all the stops
‘Cause this is where the future starts.
The neighborhood is breaking down
And rescue squads are not around.
Out in the street are young people
Who’ve go no, got nowhere to turn to.
It’s time to get this situation under control.

One can really make a diff’rence in this world
And together we can make a miracle. So,

Do it up, do it up, do it up!
Do it up, do it up, do it up!

Some people may look at you like you’re
Some kind of dreamer,
But believe you’ve got to have a dream
Before you can have a dream come true. So,

Do it up, do it up, do it up!
Do it up, do it up, do it up!

World In Motion

It’s a world that’s changing faster every day,
We’ve gotta get with it before it gets away.
Turnin’ inside out, and upside down,
Ev’rywhere new people movin’ into town.

Oh, the earth is movin’ underneath our feet,
And thing’ll never be the same up and down our street
‘Cause we’re livin’ in a world in motion,
Living in a world in motion,
Yeah, we’re living in a world in motion,
Living in a world in motion.
Wo, world in motion, world in motion, world in motion.

The world comes into our livin’ room on satellite T.V.
I know more about you, you know more about me.
And there’s a chance that soon we’ll find we can respect
All our diff’rences we’re learnin’ to accept.

Oh, the earth is movin’ underneath our feet… etc.
And thing’ll never be the same up and down our street
‘Cause we’re livin’ in a world in motion,
Livin’ in a world in motion,
Yeah, we’re livin’ in a world in motion,
Living in a world in motion.
Livin’, livin’, livin’,
Livin’ in a world in motion,
Livin’ in a world in motion, livin’!

What’s Happening To You

I’ve looked into your eyes and I’ve seen my reflection,
Walked down your street and it takes me home.
I have seen you cry, felt the tears on my face
When you’ve been out there all alone.‘Cause when it comes down to what matters,
We’re cut from the same cloth.
When one of us is suffering, we suffer the same loss. And when we cry, cry together,
When we survive, we survive together.
And when we rise we rise together,
Our destinies are tied together.

Wherever you may live, whoever you might be
What’s happening to you, is happening to me.
How can I turn away, pretend that I don’t see
What’s happening to you, is happening to me.

I look into your eyes and there’s a sudden recollection,
We all share a common ground.
We cannot erase that family connection,
No matter how many bridges are burnin’ down.

We walk this road together and everyone falls sometimes.
Gotta help each other, can’t leave anyone behind.

And when we cry, cry together,
When we survive, we survive together.
And when we rise we rise together,
Our destinies are tied together.

Wherever you may live … etc.

We cannot allow the savagery of hatred anymore
Or the legacy of violence to go on.

Wherever you may live … etc.

We’ve Got The Power

VERSE
Everybody knows what’s happening to the forests
Everybody knows about the rain
Everybody’s joining in the chorus
But we’re not all singing the same refrain
No one’s got all the answers,
No one’s got all the truth
It lies in ancient wisdom
And in the eyes of youth
We tamed every wilderness,
Crossed the lunar sands,
Conquered one another
Now we must understand:

CHORUS
We’ve got the power, we’ve got the power
In every heart, in every land
We’ve got the power, we’ve got the power,
We hold tomorrow in our hands

VERSE
Somewhere they’re cutting wood to cook their supper
They don’t have much but they’ve got the right to live
Somewhere else they’re rushing down the freeway,
And somewhere something’s got to give

It can bring us all together,
It can tear us all apart
Now the wind is changing,
We can make another start

We’ve seen too much devastation,
Too many people hurt
We must make peace with one another,
Make peace with the earth

CHORUS

I’ve got the power
You’ve got the power
We hold tomorrow in our hands

We Are Refugees

CHORUS
We are refugees,
Children of the sand,
Carried by the breeze
From our motherland.
Borne on winds of strife,
Cast on stormy seas,
On the edge of life,
We are refugees.

VERSE
Ragged and weary, we land on your shores,
Wait at your borders and stand by your doors.
Begging for shelter, we reach for your hand,
Dying for causes we don’t understand.

We are not strangers to sorrow or pain
Tears are what fell, though we prayed for the rain.
Lands became deserts of powder and stone,
Where only the number of dying has grown.

CHORUS

BRIDGE
We don’t choose our destiny
Or decide where we are born.
Famine, war and poverty
Are the cards we are dealt,
The straws which are drawn.

CHORUS

Up With People!

It happened just this morning, I was walking down the street,
The milkman and the postman and policeman I did meet.
There in ev’ry window and ev’ry single door,
I recognized people I’d never noticed before.

Up! Up with people!
You meet ‘em wherever you go,
Up! Up with People!
They’re the best kind of folks we know.
If more people were for people,
All people ev’rywhere,
There’d be a lot less people to worry about,
And a lot more people who care.

People from the south-land and people from the north,
Like a mighty army, I saw them coming forth.
‘Twas a great reunion, befitting of a king!
Then I realized people were more important than things.

Up! Up with people!… etc.

It Takes A Whole Village

Papa’s out in the field mama’s down by the well
Grandma’s away at the market with manioc to sell.
A neighbor is watching the children
they’re playing down by the path.
An old man comes along and tells them a story
Always makes them laugh and he says:
“When you go down by the river watch out for those crocodiles.”
You see in Africa the old saying goes:

It takes a whole village to raise a child. (4X)
Ina chukua kijiji kizima kum lea m’ toto

The world is a village now and it isn’t very large.
It’s a struggle for survival families working so hard.
And who is watching the children in front of the big TV
And helping them to understand everything they see?
Who is going to sit down with them and listen for awhile?
You see in Africa the old saying goes:

It takes a whole village … etc.

Leave ‘em a dream tell ‘em a tale
Teach ‘em to read and hammer a nail.
Uncles and aunts grandparents and teachers
Big sisters big brothers neighbors shopkeepers.

It takes a whole village … etc.

Home Foundation

VERSE
When we think of what it is that makes us who we are today,
We must stop and tell the story of the family.
Whether it was good or bad, maybe happy, maybe sad,
We are made of what we had in the family.
It’s the fundamental education that we all receive,
And the better we can make it, the better life can be.

CHORUS
So we must never give up on our home foundation.
Whatever it is, don’t stop givin’ it dedication.

VERSE
There’s a young man on the corner, makin’ deals.
His fam’ly are five other guys who vandalize and steal.
They just don’t see any other way to go,
No father figure to explain there is another road.

And the young girl who’s run away and walks the streets alone,
Never felt the love of fam’ly since the day that she was born.

CHORUS
No, we must never give up … etc.

BRIDGE
Oh, the little ones, bearing witness to ev’rything they see,
Imitate in detail what they will grow up to be.
We can teach them to love,
We can teach them to hate,
We can break the chain of madness someday.

VERSE
Oh, you might be a single parent, you might be a teenage mom,
You might live in suburbia, or maybe you don’t have a job.
But the backbone of the future is in the fam’ly log.
If there is no hope in family, then there is no hope at all.

CHORUS
Never give up … etc.

Guardians of the Universe / Believe

GUARDIANS OF THE UNIVERSE

Painter of the sky:
I’m the painter of the sky, above the clouds I fly,
And whether it’s wet or dry, I try to satisfy.
But sometimes I could cry. Though I still care, I wonder why.
It must be ‘cause I’m just that kind of guy.

It’s not an easy job to do, keeping all the heavens blue,
Filling in the holes where the light shines through,
Touching up the sun at night, making sure the moon is bright,
Painting ev’ry cloud and the rainbows too.

Then ev’ry day I give the moon its face before the silver linings I replace.
I’m the painter of the sky, above the clouds I fly, but why?
It must be ‘cause I’m just that kind of guy.

Angels:
The thunder disturbs your sleeping, awake you lie,
And wonder who can be creeping across the sky.

Lightning King:
Ah-ha, it is I!
I am the king of lightning and thunder, eye of the hurricane.
I make the angels cry when I feel like rain.
I am the prince of nightmares and shadows. I am a scary thing.
You’d better hide way down in the covers,
I am the Lightning King.

King of lightning is my name and fright’ning is my game.
I make a lot of noise to scare the girls and boys.
The Lightning King, a fright’ning thing am I.
It must be ‘cause I’m just that kind of guy.

Painter (spoken): Oh, no! Here she comes, Miss Charisma Bypass!
Lightning (spoken): And the “Doom Squad”

Bookkeeper:
I’m the girl, for what it’s worth, who keeps the books for planet Earth,
And I’m bound to say that your account is in the red.
Spending what you can’t replace has undermined your profit base.
Speaking in financial jargon, you are dead.

They’re chopping down the forests now and fouling up the seas,

Painter: And not a thought for oxygen.
Lightning: They think it grows on trees!

Bookkeeper:
I’m the keeper of accounts, on overdrafts I pounce.
Your checks I love to bounce while juggling my amounts.
In spite of what they’ve done, I’m willing to give them one more try.
It must be ‘cause I’m just that kind of guy. Guy?

Angels:
Look out, guys, the boss is comin’,
Stop that strummin’, quit that drummin’.
He’s so cool, he’s so chic,
Painter: he only works a four day week.

Boss:
I light the sun to keep you warm, the moon for when you fall in love.
I shine the stars that fill your eyes, and put them in the skies above.
Protect the lion and the lamb, and all the fishes in the seas,
And, being the good guy that I am, I tend the birdies and the bees.

I’ve kept things going here since time began.
For moving mountains, baby, I’m your man.
I cruise the cosmos, I’m in control,
And when I make music, it’s gotta be rock’n’roll.

I’m in charge of everything, my fans still call me King.
The Mother Earth I planned was more like Disneyland.
With birds I taught to fly, the fish to swim and babies cry.
And plenty food, enough to satisfy.
It must be ‘cause I’m just that kind of guy.

Angels: What a guy!

BELIEVE

Painter of the sky:
Good ev’ning Earth. We have a message for the human race:
You are misguided as to what goes on in outer space.

All Guardians:
No need to be afraid, we come in peace,
But certain things you do will have to cease.

Lightning King:
Consider ev’rything that you have ever heard or read,

Angels:
And all the stories you’ve been fed.

Bookkeeper:
Open your minds and listen carefully to what is said.

Angels:
Your hearts must listen to your heads.

Boss:
And should you be in doubt, remember that
There was a time you thought the Earth was flat.

Painter (spoken):
The Earth was flat… that’s good!

All:
Believe the sun will shine,
Believe the sky is blue.
Believe the world will always turn,
Believe it’s up to you.

Boss:
We are the Guardians of your universe with much to do.

Angels:
We do it willingly for you,

Lightning King:
Like making sure the sun comes up

Painter:
And that the sky is blue.

Angels:
So many things out there to do.

All:
But what you’re doing to the Earth down here
Is only ruining the atmosphere.

It’s time to realize, you must economize
Your population rises, higher ev’ry day.
So now it’s time to choose, there’s little time to lose.
Your everlasting fuse has almost burned away.

All:
Believe the sun will shine,
Believe the sky is blue.
Believe the world will always turn,
Believe it’s up to you.
